Along almost all Ozark waterways one side of the stream will have high bluffs, and the other side will be flat meadow loaded with rich top soil. The shoreline is rocky on the rock side, and sandy on the meadow side. ozark waterways have a beautiful emerald green color due to the minerals in the water. But the green light reflected from the trees also ads to the green hue in the water. This spot is one that my guest riders will frequently have a trailside picnic. If you want to swim, you can. Kids love it!

The waterfalls found in the Ozarks are not large. But few are as beautiful. What makes waterfall trips so much fun is that most of them are in remote locations. Few people are willing to make the effort to get to them. But on horseback it is an easy trip! Moreover, the scenery along the trails leading to the falls are some of the most enjoyable. And of course, they sound wonderful. I don't know when I most enjoy visiting the falls. In winter you see them from farther away, which makes an awesome photo. But in the summer, they throw mist into the air that is so soothing and cool. And the sound echoes off the tree leaves, making a heavenly music that will put you to sleep. Add in a few song birds, some wildflowers, and it is hard to beat.

The Ozark hills are rich in colorful history. White men first settled the Ozarks in the late 1790's and early 1800's. The first settlers where actually hunters who made a few crude hunting camps. The only way in was by water. Steamboats ran up and down the White River, which flows through this part of the Ozarks. Later zinc and lead mining became a major activity in this and other parts of the Ozarks. During the civil war the area suffered horrible raids from both sides, but particularly from lawless bands of horsemen who burned, raped, and murdered, making the life of the pioneers impossible. After the war was over many area families had left. But slowly they returned to rebuild. On our rides we do see a few old mines, homesteads, and relics of the past. |
